Lawmakers oppose HEW decision on bilingual education funds
Thirteen California lawmakers protested a HEW denial of 496 276 dollars for Los Angeles City Schools bilingual program expansion. The rejected grant targeted Mala Bar Elementary East Los Angeles and five Catholic archdiocese schools, risking delays to broader rollout in San Pedro Venice and the San Fernando Valley. They urged HEW to back an approach teaching both English and Spanish, citing district goals and district leaders Ed Roybal and others.

Harvest Strike Ban Offered By Los Angeles Chamber
Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce urged a farm labor bill to ban strikes during harvest and forbid secondary boycotts such as supermarket picketing in sympathy with grape pickers. Chamber leader John Vaughn argued the National Labor Relations Act lacks agriculture specifics. He led a 22 member delegation to meet lawmakers and officials. The group also proposed job site picketing bans in other sectors, more federal customs personnel for Southern California, urban mass transit aid, and a nationwide federally financed welfare program.
