Cancer Held Inevitable After Smoking 20 Years
HOUSTON report from the International Cancer Congress cites Dr. Juin Turner of Springfield saying 20 years of smoking or about 2000 cigarettes makes death from lung cancer and other tobacco related diseases almost certain. The study of 5416 patients links heavy smoking to vascular disease bronchitis emphysema and lung cancer. Turner notes a strong dose effect and warns that cigarettes will kill 80 percent of cancer deaths this year with 200000 smoking related fatalities in 1970. He emphasizes need for motivation to quit and highlights cellular damage in the lung cilia escalator from tobacco use.
