The National Safety Council warns Memorial Day weekend traffic could produce as many as 260 deaths and 10 000 disabling injuries as over 40 million cars take to the roads. A record two day total would surpass 241 from 1953, with guidance urging strict speed limits and sober driving.
In Little Rock, Gov. Faubus faced a crushing defeat as three segregationists on the school board were recalled amid anger over firing 44 teachers. The defeated leaders included board president Ed McKinley, while three moderates who favored some integration retained their seats and received a vote of confidence. Now the Pulaski County Board of Education must fill the vacancies.
Genevieve Sosa, age 19, was killed on her birthday after a celebration delay. Her fiancé Jaime Lopez, 23, arrived at 5 am distressed, claiming she was dead, as the family and nine others awaited the cake. The incident occurred in Gary, Indiana, prompting police involvement.
Police on Chicago’s West Side provided details Jaime could not share about a trip to Chicago to buy an engagement ring and celebrate Genevieve’s birthday. A speeding car hit the Sosa family car at an intersection and sped away. The Sola car was knocked into a store display window and John Fosled into it. Seethel was pronounced dead. Ernest Raguso, 21, Chicago, was arrested on a reckless homicide charge as the driver of the other car. Jaime, a Chicago employee, could not explain how he returned from Chicago.

Five people died when two cars collided on the Pacific Coast Highway at Malibu Monday night. Four occupants were trapped in a burning car, and another was killed when ejected from the other vehicle. The dead included Aloysious G. Wysche 63 Malibu Joseph H. Horrell 55 Kansas City Ralph Milter 65 Pacific Palisades Charles Jordan 42 New York City Mrs Pam Messer 25 Santa Monica. Her husband Norman 25 suffered a skull fracture. Police report the Messer car lost control on a curve at about 80 mph. The other car was driven by the deceased Wysche group. The impact pushed the four men’s car 42 feet from the crash site.
At Midway Airport a staged kiss between Rudolph Burkhalther and his wife Muriel led to his arrest on an embezzlement charge filed in Tucson for $20,940 taken last August. Muriel arranged the plan, notified police of his arrival, and funded the capture. He awaits Tucson authorities.
In Monterey Park a 76 year old man William Tie man shot his wife Catherine 76 and their 35 year old son Thomas to death then killed himself. Police said he left a note citing ill health and the bodies were found after midnight in their home.
The Big Four foreign ministers suspended their talks on Germany and departed for Washington to honor John Foster Dulles. Secretary of State Christian Herter British Foreign Secretary Lloyd Maurice Couve de Murville travel aboard a U S Air Force Constellation due in Washington by 9 am Wednesday concluding a late afternoon departure from Geneva. Gromyko traveled separately by commercial air and will return to Geneva with Herter and Lloyd Thursday night.
Culver City’s first woman mayor Mrs Mary Louise Richardson, mother of three, resigns Monday night citing that politics and homemaking do not mix. Her departure leaves the post open and prompts city officials to seek a successor.
