Coast Guard to replace 83-footers with new 82-foot cutters
Four aging 83-foot World War II craft are being retired and replaced by twin-diesel 82-foot cutters in the Long Beach fleet. The newer vessels offer air conditioning, larger crews, improved bridges, and greater range and speed. The 82-foot boat can fight fires, pump bilges, tow, and even tackle a destroyer if needed, with more efficient galley and private crew quarters.
