Wiretap admission in Berrigan plot case roils hearings
The federal government admitted using wiretaps in the case against Philip Berrigan and seven co-defendants accused of plotting to kidnap a presidential adviser, blow up tunnels, and destroy draft records. Defense counsel Ramsey Clark urged full disclosure of all taps to avoid tainting the trial, while the government argued taps were necessary to protect national security. The indictment, returned April 30, also links to letters about seizing Kissinger to end the Vietnam War. Co-defendants include Revs. Joseph Wenderoth and Neil McLaughlin, and others in Baltimore, Chicago, Lancaster, and Ashland.
