Black sheriff cleared in Tuskegee beating case
In Opelika Alabama an all white jury acquitted Sheriff Lucius Amerson and Chief Deputy Richard Coleman Jr of violating civil rights in the beating of a prisoner after a jailhouse gunfight. The two officers were indicted after Harris reported he was beaten following surrender on August 23 in Macon County jail. Amerson, the first black sheriff in Alabama since Reconstruction, hailed the verdict as justice.
