Council Passes Fly Abatement Law in Seal Beach
Seal Beach approves an emergency fly abatement ordinance, aimed at landowners failing to curb fly nuisances. The measure imposes up to 100 days in jail, a $500 fine, or both, with concerns that the Los Alamitos Naval Air Station farm’s use of untreated fertilizer fuels the fly outbreak. Local resident Petrus J. Roelofs pressed for action, proposing tarpaulins to cover the 130 acre site, but county health officials said the county cannot enforce that. The station’s commanding officer noted steps have been taken to stop untreated fertilizer from reaching the facility.
