Nixon Eyes 1958 Run If He Chooses to Seek Nomination
Former Vice President Richard Nixon told the Associated Press during a South American tour that he expects to decide before year’s end whether to run for the 1958 Republican nomination. He said if he becomes a candidate he will enter the primaries and that the nomination will be decided there. Nixon urged U.S. to reassess Latin American policy and favored a De Gaulle style system with strong leadership at the top. He praised regional leaders but warned that partisan fragmentation could threaten democracy. He also called on Brazil and Argentina to take a larger police role and to show greater interest in Vietnam, while noting Alliance for Progress growth is barely keeping up with population.
