Authorization for Douglas Strike Voted

United Auto Workers Local 148 members voted 98.1 percent to authorize a strike at the Long Beach Douglas Aircraft Co plant if negotiations fail. Only 6,200 of 15,000 members cast ballots after a capacity audience in Municipal Auditorium urged peaceable settlement. Leonard Woodcock led protests over alleged labor contract violations and skipped concessions.

El Crash Hurts 26 in Chicago

A Chicago elevated train derailed at a curve and plowed into a storage building injuring at least 26. Fire crews and a crane helped remove the injured to street level. Motorman Peter Albamante said brakes failed on the curve.

Two AEC Members Resigning From U S Atomic Panel

The White House announced two of the five Atomic Energy Commission members will resign. John H. Williams cites a serious illness and John F. Floberg leaves for personal reasons. Loren Keith Olsen was nominated to fill Floberg’s term ending June 30 1962. Williams remains until June 30.

High Court Refuses Spy Case Appeal

The Supreme Court declined to rehear the 1957 espionage conviction of Soviet agent Rudolf Abel in New York. Abel, serving a 30 year sentence at Atlanta Federal Prison, had his appeal urged by attorney James B. Donovan who argued for innocent millions affected by immigration and naturalization laws.

A Supreme Court hearing will review Frank Costello’s bid to overturn a ruling stripping him of U.S. citizenship. The 69 year old New York racketeer was charged with fraud and misrepresentation in obtaining his citizenship in 1923.

Wife Flies to Save Dying Husband at Dallas Love Field

Mrs. Spencer F. Black a mother of five guided her Beechcraft Bonanza to land at Love Field after her pilot husband lay dying. Despite no flying experience she executed SOS calls, then dived toward the runway before pulling up, as control tower advised.

Four Aboard Plane Missing Near Las Vegas

An aerial search began for a small Beechcraft Bonanza missing from Las Vegas with four aboard. Reported passengers include Jane Liberace, 42, Roth Perrino and his wife from Los Angeles, and pilot Ralph Quartaroli, owner of the red and white aircraft. Sheriff deputies stated those aboard were identified as family members and a local pilot.

Plane violation alleged in East German air rights dispute

US Reds claim a single place sports plane bore east German markings and strayed 60 miles into Red territory from Strasbourg to Malmo. Soviet ADN quotes Col Jakubowski reporting fighters demanded landing and the craft returned toward West Germany after signaling. The Bonn embassy said the intruder was unintentional and apologized.

Summit Session Held May Be Last

Paris reports the summit collapsed in its first session as Khrushchev and Eisenhower accused each other of sabotaging the talks over the U2 incident. Khrushchev urged a six month delay and canceled Eisenhower's planned Moscow visit. Eisenhower challenged Khrushchev to private talks while condemning the Soviet leader's comments. Readiness Increased in North American Air Defense Drill

Navy Capt. Russell Trudeau said the North American air defense squadron based in San Diego was placed on an elevated readiness alert, not just a drill. The unit, the only Navy squadron under American Defense Command, moved pilots to higher readiness with Skyraiders on one-hour to three-hour notices and added four pilots on five-minute notice.

Johnson accuses Khrushchev of wrecking summit
