Plan to redesign California junior and senior high programs
A 37 member commission appointed by State Schools Chief Riles delivered over 100 recommendations for California's 1,800 junior and senior high schools. The plan supports competency based credits, team teaching, flexible progression, temporary withdrawal and reentry, and greater student and parental input in hiring. The tenure elimination was dropped after protests. Riles called the report the first major reevaluation in over 50 years and seeks local input before actions.

Fresno students walk out during overnight camp-in protest
Mexican American students at Fresno State University staged an overnight camp-in at the administration offices to pressure for policy changes. Negotiations with president Norman Baxter halted as students refused to leave, then agreed to depart for the night after a pledge to resume talks for two hours later and another two hours the next morning. No firm agreements emerged, and the La Raza studies program designations remained unresolved.
