Oil Firms Clash Over Bill to Bar Lead in Gas

Sacramento UPI report says oil industry spokesmen clashed with a proposed bill to remove all lead from gasoline by 1980. Fred Hartley of Union Oil said the industry already sells low lead in California and supports gradual reduction. Phillips Petroleum endorsed with minor reservations. Texaco opposed. The bill would sharply cut lead in regular fuel by 1971 and remove it entirely by 1986, with limited traces allowed in premium after 1930.

Santa Barbara Channel drill plans delay oil fund says exploratory

Humble Of and Refining Co. said no immediate plans to begin commercial drilling at its new Santa Barbara Channel oil and gas discovery. Five oil-producing wells have been tested in the deep test well 1050 feet of water, 12 miles southeast of Point Conception, while Sun Oil Co. plans immediate drilling in Santa Barbara on its lease after a delayed approval. Texaco opposes unleaded fuel mandates, citing competitive fuel options, and lawmakers push bills to reduce gasoline evaporative emissions.

Yorty Backs City Reimbursement for Campus Disturbances

Los Angeles Mayor Sam Yorty endorsed a bill to reimburse fire and police costs for handling campus disturbances. He urged always reimbursing, arguing public safety may require intervention even without a college request. He cited over $100,000 spent by LAPD last year at San Fernando Valley State College and UCLA.
