Pioneering stewardesses shaped early airline service
Steve Stimpson of Burbank recalls the infancy of air travel when eight nurses became the first stewardesses on a 13 stop San Francisco to Chicago flight. They served meals, assisted passengers to restrooms, and helped with baggage as the crew evolved from pilots handing out coffee to a dedicated flight team. Stimpson, who helped recruit them, later drafted the first stewardess uniforms and manuals, marking a turning point in airline service.
