Guilty Teachers Reinstated Despite Official Objections
SACRAMENTO UPI The State Board of Education reinstated teaching credentials for two conviced petty thieves after brief suspensions despite objections from Vice President Milton L Schwartz who argued for stricter penalties. One case involved $1.59 stolen from a San Diego drug store and another $87.93 from a San Jose store. The board also reinstated a Los Angeles man’s credential revoked in 1962 for lewd conduct. A referee praised rehabilitation and a hearing plan for teacher sanity complaints was postponed to next month.

Senate Approves Key Curricula Bill in California
SACRAMENTO UPC The Senate approved and sent to the Assembly a key education bill of the 1967 session that would transfer authority to establish school curricula to local boards of education. The 35-4 vote, led by Sen. George Miller, D-Martinez, follows claims it would cut mandatory subjects and bring local flexibility. Miller said it could be the most significant education bill in 50 years, while detractors warn of shifting control from the legislature to the State Board of Education.
