Navy ad offers Hawaii shore duty and dubious pay plan
A Dolphin newspaper notice advertises three years of Hawaiian shore duty with a cost of living allowance and smooth moves for families. The case centers on Sgt. Higdon charged with bribery and graft after funds tied to service clubs at Long Binh allegedly funded promotions for Liggett and Myers products. Witness Glenn Faulks testified large kickbacks were directed to Higdon’s clubs and paid via checks made out to Georg Schell to conceal the flow.

Doves plot to broaden draft extension with Hatfield McGovern goal
A bipartisan Senate group plans to attach the Hatfield McGovern Act to the draft extension bill to force a Dec 31 cutoff of funds for U S forces in Indochina. The tactic hinges on a combined bill that could either pass with war funding or fail with the draft preserved, prompting Nixon to choose between arms. Senate doves say extended draft only if a war end date is guaranteed, as debate must end before June 30. Rep Mills denies 1972 presidential run while signaling possible active candidacy if nominated.
