Europe breaks into American airline market with Airbus lease

Europe seeks entry into the U S airspace as Eastern Airlines plans to lease four Airbus A300 jetliners from December in a trial to gauge market potential. Douglas chief sees Europe as competitor

Douglas Aircraft Co. spokesmen declined to comment on Eastern Airlines plan to buy European widebody aircraft. Douglas President John C. Brizendine warned Europe’s aviation industry is competitive and rising in world markets while Ray Bates noted the DC10 twinjet would expand capacity and fuel efficiency on medium routes, with an Airbus A300-style competitor in view though not deliverable for about 40 years.
