Nuclear shells for European artillery plan discussed by officials
The Army ordered several thousand new nuclear shells for large cannons in Europe. The modernization program aims to replace older atomic ammunition for 155 mm and B inch howitzers, promising greater simplicity and reliability without expanding Europe’s atomic stockpile. Costs are kept secret, but congressional sources estimate millions. Senator Symington questioned Defense Secretary Richardson on the program’s cost.
