California’s AFDC rolls rose to 1,415,205 in March, up 12,811 from February, the largest total in nearly two years. The slowdown came mainly from a smaller rise in families with an unemployed breadwinner, up 6,800 (4.2 percent) after bigger gains in prior months. John Sullivan, a state spokesman, commented on the trend.
The San Diego county welfare department reported 28 South Vietnamese refugees living with area families have filed applications for welfare. If the influx continues, up to 1,000 or more refugees could resettle in the county, impacting welfare funds. Data shows rising rolls tied to unemployment and recession, with food stamp recipients increasing to 1,555,031 in March.
The Senate Rules Committee approved Gov. Brown’s choice Armald Sternberg as director of housing and community development despite alleged past service with the Haganah. Critics from the American-Arab Relations committee urged reconsideration, while Sternberg said he deplored terrorism now as in the past.
Washington HEW reports January AFDC recipients rose to 11,147,071, up 141,447 from December, the largest monthly gain since 1971. Unemployed fathers in welfare families grew to 105,161, while total welfare outlays climbed to 1.94 billion, reflecting more recipients and higher payments.
