End oil depletion tax break now urged by Green
Representative William J. Green backed by AFL C IO Common Cause Ralph Nader and 125 House Democrats pressed for an immediate House vote to end the 22 percent oil depletion allowance, opposing the Ways and Means Committee three year phaseout plan. Green argues oil profits will double in 1974 and that oil companies should rely on markets, not tax breaks, for profits. He seeks to wind down the allowance immediately and impose a windfall profits tax. The move drew support from labor groups and the National Committee for Tax Justice with United Auto Workers backing the effort.
