A Detroit mother of five, once given six months to live, now leads a near normal life after doctors replaced a leaky mitral valve with a metal spring valve developed by Wayne State University doctors and Elgin National Watch Co. The diamond shaped valve, about the size of a penny, uses a nylon web to open and close with each heartbeat, and is predicted to last 300 years.

An accidental release of non poisonous trichloroethylene gas at the Maxwell House coffee plant in Hoboken caused about 60 workers to fall ill, with at least 18 hospitalized. Four boys held in Sterling City murder case
In Sterling City Texas a 13 year old and three companions, all from Big Spring, were jailed after a station attendant, Taylor Garrett, 54, was killed when the youths allegedly refused to pay for gas. The teens were captured after the car wrecked while eluding a roadblock near San Angelo. A 5 year old witness described gunfire and said Mike Martings fired six shots. All four youths were held without charge. two others are hospitalized with arm and shoulder injuries.
