Butane blast hurls Bellflower driver like a cannonball
A Tuesday accident at Ace Bag Lunch Co. in Wilmington hurled Fred Uhl, 48, across a parking lot after a tank truck hose sparked a blast. Uhl, of Gardenia, suffered second and third degree burns over much of his body while pumping butane. Firefighters said a hose trip likely caused the vapor to escape and ignite. He was taken to Seaview Medical Clinic then to a private hospital. Three bystanders fled the vapor cloud as the fire ignited. A worker drove Uhl to the clinic for initial care.
