JDL members lose bid for kosher prison meals

Two Jewish Defense League members, Jeffrey Simlow and Richard Huss, lose a federal suit asserting a right to kosher food in prison. Judge Thomas Griesa ruled BOP may refuse such meals as expensive and not a general prisoner entitlement. They await a one year term at the Federal Youth Center in Ashland, Kentucky. Miss Arkansas Julie Forshee wins 1875 America Junior Miss title

Julie Ann Forshee, 17, of Fayetteville was named 1875 America Junior Miss in Mobile Alabama. She earns a $10,000 college scholarship. Corlis Jean Chang, 17, of Hawaii, was second runner-up and Tryn Lee Hunter, 18, of Columbus Ohio, was third runner-up.

Boy 2 Rescued After Five Hours in Well

A 2 year old boy named Michael Smith was trapped ten feet down a narrow bean-field well in Miami Dade County. Rescuers used jackhammers and shovels to tunnel and reach him, pulling him to safety after five hours. He was reported in satisfactory condition at a nearby hospital, while his mother Barbara Jean Smith, 20, acknowledged leaving him in a car while picking beans.

McGovern visits Havana and urges end to embargo

UPI reports Senator George McGovern toured Havana dining on black beans and rice at La Bodegita del Medio and pressed for open trade with Cuba. He said he cannot lift the embargo but favors improving relations and studied Cuba’s government and economy during the educational trip. He met Cuban intellectuals and planned talks with officials.

Hussein offers peace terms with Israel at Citadel speech

Jordan's King Hussein told The Citadel that Arabs are ready to make final peace with Israel if Israel withdraws from all Arab territory and recognizes Palestinian rights. He urged Americans to push Israel toward true security through peace with neighbors and cited U.S. ties with Ford and Kissinger. He warned that continued refusal could spark another war and blamed Kissinger's shuttle diplomacy for past failures.
