Operation Alert drills tied to a world of crime in 1958
President Eisenhower and thousands in Washington join the Operation Alert drill as a mock bomb attack sparks evacuations and sheltering. In New York a parade of civilians, reporters, and calm officials sample the emergency setup while police link a Montreal bank robbery to a Brockville safecracking. The Brockville theft totals 2,295,000 in bonds and cash with a Montreal branch hit as well. Police say the methods align with a January Montreal theft and the two incidents may be connected.
