Golda Meir makes historic visit to Communist Romania

Seven Die as Steam Line Expansion Joint Fails in Manhattan

In a blast on the 36th floor of a Pine Street tower, seven people die when an expansion joint in a steam line fails. Four women and three men perish instantly as four rooms are affected, with 4000 evacuees allowed to return after 2 pm. The 14 inch riser carried steam at 1580 pounds pressure, and Mayor Lindsay notes lines run deep in the building’s walls.
