House OKs 9 percent raise for federal workers
The House Post Office and Civil Service Committee approved a bill by Rep. Kathryn Granahan to raise federal pay 9 percent, costing about 510 million annually. The plan would start July 1, apply to 1,700,000 workers, and set a minimum annual raise of 356. It extends pay and retirement benefits to about 15,000 agricultural and stabilization workers, with effects across white collar, social, congressional, and judicial staff. The administration opposed the increase this year and the panel backed the move 213 to 9, with a 16 to 4 committee vote against strong objections.
