Brown Still Advising Withhold Tax Proposal
Former Gov Edmund G Brown told a UC Irvine audience that California lost nearly a billion dollars by not adopting his 1963 withholding tax plan. He said the measure would have raised about 125 million annually, cost taxpayers nothing, and would have captured revenue from nonpayers. Senate Group OKs Bond Rate Hike for States
SACRAMENTO A bill to help the state overcome construction problems from tight money moved to the Senate floor. The Senate Finance Committee approved raising the maximum bond interest rate from five to six percent, contingent on a constitutional amendment approval by Legislature and voters. Legislative Analyst A Alan Post urged approval, saying it is a needed step to permit bond sales. The state has about 1.3 billion in bonds unsold as buyers won’t bid at the current ceiling.
