Ford Veto Looms Over Farm Bill by Friday
Washington aides say President Ford will veto an emergency farm support bill by Friday at the latest. The one year measure would raise 1975 crop loan and target rates for wheat feed grains and cotton and also lift supports for soybeans and dairy products. Backers say the bill protects farmers if record crops drive prices below costs. Agriculture Secretary Earl Butz opposed it, warning it could revive controls and add about 1.8 billion to the deficit. Butz had suggested a compromise via administrative actions to raise loan rates.

Massachusetts passes tough gun law cuts crimes of passion
One month after Massachusetts enacted the tough gun law, officials report fewer crimes of passion though professional criminals may ignore it. The statute imposes a one year prison term for carrying a gun without a permit with no parole or probation. Police praise its deterrent potential while noting early arrests and unresolved questions about overall crime impact. Gov Dukakis plans statewide warning signs at state borders, but lack of reciprocity with Maine and Vermont is noted.
