Nixon pays most back taxes but details withheld
Washington D C UPI. President Nixon has paid most of his nearly 467000 back income tax debt for 1989 1972 but IRS and White House would not confirm payment or first installment. An administration official said most of the bill and interest have been paid leaving open whether any loan or sale of property will occur. Officials cited honest mistakes in tax returns prepared during Nixon years and noted no civil fraud found by IRS or a joint committee.

Gurney attacks law in asking dismissal
UPI reports U S Senator Edward J. Gurney asked Leon County Court to dismiss a charge under Florida campaign contribution reporting law. He argued the law is vague and unconstitutional and contends the indictment was unlawful due to an alleged unauthorized witness. Gurney may not attend the May 7 hearing or the May 8 plea, with the trial possible in absentia.
