Investigation Targets Use of Navy Stewards at White House
Senator Proxmire says GAO efforts to obtain White House records on about 60 Navy stewards assigned to the White House mess and private homes have been blocked for seven months by White House and Pentagon officials. Stewards report long hours and no pay for serving at private parties, with some flown to Florida and California for duties. The White House has not allowed GAO interviews or access to records, Haig not replying to a December request.
