Author Claims Ray Shot King to Help Wallace
New York based Look magazine excerpt quotes William Bradford Huie claiming James Earl Ray believed killing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would help George C. Wallace win the presidency and earn a pardon. Huie cites Ray’s self view as a political prisoner and notes alleged foreknowledge by others, with discussions of conspiracy and potential future release in two to four years. He recounts Ray’s family and associates, Ray’s changing lawyers, and contemporaneous statements from Ray’s lawyers in Look.

Kennedy pressed to show presidential potential in Senate run
Senator Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts faces growing calls from supporters to outline presidential ambitions and policy stances. Despite months of steady Senate attention and past draft talk, he has yet to publicly address Vietnam and broader foreign policy, while criticizing Nixon on the Safeguard system but avoiding new comments on ending the war. fellow Democrats Eugene McCarthy of Minnesota and Edmund Muskie of Maine, both prominent at last year’s convention, share his muted approach.
