In a surf tragedy at Ocean Beach a boat capsized in 10 to 12 feet waves. A husband died while his wife and infant were rescued after being trapped under the overturned craft. Lifeguards and surfers pulled the survivors from the hull as gas fumes hampered aid.
Lifeguards and teenagers helped revive a nonswimmer mother and a baby after a boat trapped three people in gasoline fumes off Huntington Beach. James Rayl and a girl surfer used surfboards for resuscitation while another lifeguard and guards assisted the man and woman ashore. The baby’s color shifted from blue to pink within minutes amid rescue efforts. Authorities identified two teenage surfers as helpers, Robert Parrott and Linda Smith, both residents of Hawaiian Gardens.

Three Sacramento men are charged with murder after a fatal stabbing at the Bohemia Club in the south side. Victims are Ishmael Lozano, 20, of Selma, and Daniel Carillo, 19, Sacramento. Suspects Trinidad Ramos, 20, Oscar Escobar, 22, and Pete Escobar, 21, face two counts each. About 125 people were present when the brawl erupted early Sunday.
A UC Berkeley seismographic station reports a strong South Pacific quake near the New Hebrides Islands at 2 14 am. The event registered between 6 5 and 6 75 on the Richter scale, strong enough to cause structural damage if it struck inhabited areas.
