AFL Group backs Engle draw s fire in Los Angeles
In Los Angeles County the AFL United Voters League endorsed Democratic Rep. Clair Engle for the U S Senate, drawing sharp criticism from Governor Knight and labor leader Joseph De Silva who call the move a vicious stab at labor and a Democratic capture of the AFL. Knight warned labor may view the endorsement as evidence of unreliability among public officials. De Silva claimed labor’s support for Engle recalls past Taft Hartley votes. Knight had previously enjoyed AFL support in 1954.
