FCC Nominee Mills Seeks Better TV Through Demand Not Censorship
Edward K. Mills Jr., nominated to the FCC by President Eisenhower, says broadcast quality can rise via public demand and gentle regulation, not censorship. If confirmed, he would replace John C. Doerfer after Doerfer resigned amid ethics questions. Mills, a Princeton Yale alum and attorney, says youth should access varied programming and cites gunfire concerns on TV. His wife Shirley Burks and daughters, ages 12 and 10, share a Georgetown home. Mills once served as a wartime pilot and later a planning officer.
