End of era as Zephyr makes final westbound run
The California Zephyr ends its long service era with a mournful farewell in Shafter Nevada as Western Pacific still fields questions on jet air travel. About 120 passengers ride eastbound and 150 westbound on the last trains, while onlookers recall the Zephyr’s 18 hour history and the shift to faster air travel.

Last Train West Zephyr Farewell Through Canyon
After a brief exchange of trainmasters the eastbound Zephyr arrived Salt Lake City 1 hour 40 minutes late hampered by crowding at stations switching issues and a slow freight and a farewell celebrant. A helicopter and cars trailed the eastbound Zephyr as it wound along the Feather River Canyon with onlookers at trestles trees and signal stands. About 150 people saw the last train off Oakland Saturday morning and about 100 at Stockton northward waving farewell including demonstrators.

New Study Questions Long-Held Views on Death by Own Action
Framing a discussion at the American Association of Suicidology meeting, Dr. Calvin Frederick urged reevaluating statistics on self destruction. Dr. Michael L. Peck presented the largest U.S. collegiate study, finding lower college suicide rates than some prior figures and noting middle-class, socially isolated youths as typical victims. Japanese data from Kyota University showed higher female and rural rates, challenging beliefs about demographic risk.
