Ike May Agree to Aid British A-Power Aims
Washington reports a Bermuda conference between President Eisenhower and Prime Minister Macmillan could lead to American help in arming Britain as a nuclear power. Talks set to begin Thursday would cover Middle East issues and NATO troop levels, with a push to bolster Britain’s firepower and atomic capabilities within legal bounds. The plan hinges on possible policy changes to permit delivery of missiles with nuclear warheads if needed. Macmillan aims to push for easing nonstrategic trade with Red China and keeping Peiping out of the UN, while opposing U.N. membership for Peiping at next fall’s General Assembly.
