Meir Blames Russ for Syria Stance in Jerusalem Speech

Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir said in Jerusalem that the Soviet Union is not pushing Syria to disengage from Israeli forces and that Israel cannot surrender the Golan Heights. She argued Moscow lacks a decisive role in a potential disengagement with Egypt, while Syria and Israel exchanged heavy artillery fire along the Golan cease-fire line. Earlier, Israel eased tensions by reopening roads for civilians and allowing farmers to return to fields on the heights.

Senate housing bill OKs subsidy program

The Senate passed a $10.4 billion housing bill expanding subsidy programs for the poor and allowing cities to receive single grant funds. The measure, approved 7 to 11, increases funding beyond Nixon’s request and consolidates urban renewal, model cities, open spaces, water sewer grants, neighborhood development, and public facility loans into a block grant system with added strings. The bill funds $2.8 billion for community development grants in 1975 and $3.3 billion in 1976, sending the measure to the House for action possibly two months away.
