American handcrafts revival gains steam nationwide
Antique hunters and crafts collectors are urged to explore contemporary handmade work from American craftsmen. Mrs. Vanderbilt Webb, founder of the American Craftsmen Council and Museum of Contemporary Crafts, notes 125 affiliated groups with 30,000 to 40,000 makers. She says handcrafts survived the Industrial Revolution suppression and the Depression by offering small income, with ceramics, weaving, jewelry, and woodworking growing in interest. The museum exhibits modern tapestries priced in five figures, while even simple aprons offer creative outlets, keeping people engaged with their hands. Mrs. Webb herself works on a seashell mosaic in her New York apartment.
