Mine Rescue Efforts Aim to Save 18 Trapped

Rescue teams battled worsening weather to reach 18 miners trapped in a Kentucky area mine. Snow, freezing temperatures, and slick roads hampered efforts as eight crews and police coordinated outside the mine. Two men near the air shaft escaped after crawling through a 14 inch ventilation passage for about three hours. William K. Donaldson, mine safety director, oversaw survival tactics guidance. Relatives gathered, weather slowed progress, and authorities called road crews and plows to clear routes toward the scene.
