Butz asks easing of beef cost
Washington Agriculture Secretary Earl Butz urged supermarkets to cut retail beef prices by reducing record profit margins. A supermarket spokesman predicted prices will drop soon. Clarence Adamy, NAFC president, defended retailers as not profiteering and noted meat profits are low despite wholesale declines. He warned any consumer relief may be temporary if cattle prices rebound within a month.
