Air Force announces amnesty for drug users in service
General John D. Ryan Air Force chief of staff announced an amnesty program for men who admit drug use and seek medical help. The policy mirrors the Army plan, offering treatment and possible rehabilitation rather than punishment under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Amnesty applies before arrest or investigation, and while not punished for drug use, personnel may face administrative actions such as removal from flying status reassignment or administrative discharge. Discharges under this program will not be less than honorable.

Susan Atkins Confesses Favoring Gas Chamber in Murder Case
Lawyer Susan Atkins, a Manson Family member convicted over the Tate LaBianca killings, admitted a year ago she was not afraid of the gas chamber and would welcome it. Her former attorney Richard Caballero testified about a deal with the District Attorney's office offering a jail sentence for her testimony before the Los Angeles County Grand Jury, a testimony that led to indictments of Atkins and others for the 1969 killings. He said he arranged the deal before Atkins spoke with Manson, fearing Atkins might refuse to testify if she spoke to him.
