Long Beach Woman Named Nominee for National GOP Leaders
Mrs. Gladys O'Donnell of Long Beach won unanimous support from the National Federation of Republican Women nominating committee to be president at the May Washington convention. The race pits her against Phyllis Schlafly of Alton Illinois, a clash reflecting pragmatic versus ultraconservative factions within the party. O'Donnell, a longtime GOP operative and pilot, would lead the NFRW with broad support from state delegations, while Schlafly commands strong southern and Ohio influence. The contest highlights differing paths for GOP gains ahead of the 1968 elections.
