Trial begins for hatchet slayings of San Pedro woman and infant

26 year old former Long Beach State student John Michael Finlay faces two counts of murder and one of assault with a deadly weapon for the 1971 hatchet killings of Judith Terry and her 16 month old son Jan in San Pedro. The husband was critically injured but survived. Judge Ernest Kelly will hear the case after delays for psychiatric testing and a January 4 finding of mental fitness. Finlay was arrested nearby by Harbor Division police.

61 year old sex offender found insane in Torrance court

Bert Sturgeon a transient and convicted sex offender pleaded guilty to kidnapping and molesting a seven year old Gardena girl. Judges ruled he was unable to understand proceedings and not competent for legal counsel, sending him to the state Department of Mental Health for treatment.
