Police officer saves woman from suicide on Long Beach bridge
Sgt. Wesley W. Bertz of the Long Beach police halted a woman, Bernadette B. Stockard, 21, who perched over the water from the Gerald Desmond bridge. In a struggle with about 15 onlookers, Bertz grabbed for her as she dangled and tore her sleeve. she was brought to safety and then sent to Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk for psychiatric observation. Motive for the act was not known.
