Five youths sentenced in Long Beach college student slaying

Five of six youths pled guilty to second degree murder in the Nov 8 shotgun death of a Long Beach City College student. Sentences ranged from six months to life with parole eligibility for some under a youth offender act. Vander Hoek received the full five years to life. Clausen, the suspected trigger man, is at large.

Compton Man Sentenced in Long Beach Rape Case

Harl Wayne Westbrook of Compton was sentenced to a possible life term after pleading guilty to abduction and sexual assault of a 24 year old Long Beach woman. He previously carjacked in Compton, beat the victim in her garage, and fled in her car, with the trunk scene described by investigators.

Semiautomatic rifle fired in station holdup

A man armed with a semiautomatic rifle robbed Tony's Exxon station in Berkeley firing several shots and wounding a 44 year old man. He took about $6,000 but dropped most of it and fled in a car. The weapon and about $5,000 were recovered. A witness was also shot at during the escape.
