Jupiter's Great Red Spot and the Pioneer probes
Scientists seek to solve the 300 year mystery of Jupiter's Great Red Spot with the Pioneer missions launched in the early 1970s. The probes will study Jupiter's atmosphere and magnetic field while possibly venturing beyond the solar system, testing theories of the spot's origin and the planet's hidden structure.

Rare Fermium Isotope Detected In Underground Nuclear Test
Berkeley scientists report the first detection of fermium 258, a rare isotope, after producing fermium 217 in a accelerator and isolating fermium 257 from Nevada underground rock. Fermium 258 decays astonishingly fast, with half life of 3.6 milliseconds, prompting theories about creating heavier elements 106 to 108. The finding ends a five year study, with theorists noting instability could aid or complicate future element synthesis.
