Calif. GI Bill boosts eligible veterans count

About 350,000 Californians may qualify for the new cold war GI bill as federal and state officials estimate the number eligible for college aid, home loans, and other benefits. Educational help could peak in the fall, with $100 monthly stipends and dependents’ extras. Housing loans may grow slowly due to tight money markets, but long term demand could rise as veterans plan schooling and home purchases.

Draft Defier to Serve His Time in Cell

In San Francisco federal court judge Lloyd E. Burke sentenced Darryl Skrabak, a 24 year old student, to two years in prison for refusing to report for Army induction. Skrabak had deferments as a student at Oregon State and Cal Poly while studying engineering and journalism. He stated he did not like the military and did not want to fight in Vietnam.

Sex Suspect Judge Found Shot Dead

Marysville dispatch reports Gridley Judicial District Judge John F. McDermitt, 51, indicted on 12 counts of sex perversion involving boys, was found dead with a chest wound. A .38-caliber pistol and a note to his wife were found near his body in a running car on Jack's Slough Road, five miles north of town. The note read, Darling, foregive me. You have all my love. The prior day a Butte County grand jury charged him with lewd acts with six boys under 17.

Pastor Turns Newsboy to Aid Widow Vacation

In a village near Frankfurt Pastor Kurt Oeser, 39, now rides a bicycle with three helpers each dawn to deliver morning papers to 300 parishioners so a widowed mother of two can take a needed vacation. He said no one asked him, but the woman required help and the church found this solution.

Medicare Signup Centers Opened Across Southern California

Officials said Medicare enrollment centers have opened in Los Angeles and nearby areas with a deadline looming. Spokesmen noted elderly residents who have not enrolled by March 31 may face a two year wait for next registration. 80 year old Murray Raney of Tennessee died in a traffic accident, underscoring the urgency of medical coverage enrollment.
