The Pioneer spacecraft roared from Cape Canaveral near midnight, rising toward a sun orbit after passing the moon. Officials estimated a 96,600 mile distance in about twelve hours, near halfway to the 220,000 mile sun approach.
In Tifton Georgia a school bus carrying 86 Negro pupils veered off a dirt road into a farm pond at 8 40 am. Nine children ages 5 to 15 died. five girls and four boys drowned as the bus sank on its right side. Two white men and two youths escaped by breaking windows and aiding others. Driver Doyle Jones said the vehicle lost control after hitting a rut and wheels locked. Several victims were revived by artificial respiration.
Rioting in La Paz led to the U S embassy staff moving to the outskirts for protection by the Bolivian army after Time magazine article claims. Sen Styles Bridges urged stopping foreign aid and using American military force if violence persists, amid a fatal shooting of a 15 year old student and hundreds of Americans said to be endangered.
