Antiwar protests prolonged Alvarez’s prison stay says ex POW
Navy Lt. Cmdr. Everett Alvarez Jr says American antiwar actions may have extended his 80 year North Vietnamese imprisonment and that the warm U.S. welcome made it all worth it. He spoke at Oak Knoll Naval Hospital after returning two weeks ago, noting antiwar activity possibly encouraged Hanoi but opposing amnesty for draft dodgers. Ex POW Alan Brunstrom adds POWs learned of the moon landing through propaganda slips, while Alvarez plans a long vacation before remaining in the Navy.

South Vietnam elections judged reasonably fair report finds
A Howard Penniman study for the American Enterprise Institute and Hoover Institution says South Vietnamese elections since 1966 were generally honest despite U.S. criticism. The 1971 Thieu election is not believed to be rigged, with Minh seen as having little drive to run. The Viet Cong was weakening after Tet and reform programs, and Vietnam's system was framed as the only viable option to replace Saigon. A separate grant report notes the California Council on Ching Justice received $46.5 million from the US L E A Administration.
