Oil sanctuary drives blocked by politics and lobbying
Congressional conservationists face Senate jurisdictional fights and vigorous oil industry lobbying as six Cranston sanctuary bills and related measures stall. The clash involves authority over continental shelf leasing, proposed bans on drilling, and a Nixon administration plan to shut channel leases, with Florida primary politics adding pressure. Industry witnesses urged not to delay offshore energy development, warning that energy needs require access to outer continental shelf resources while hearings remain limited.

West German refugee bluffs ferry to Malmo to seek asylum
A year old West German escaping to the Wert in a canoe persuaded the Polish ferry Gustav Vasa to bring him to Malmo Sweden. The man, whose name was withheld, asked for political asylum and was handed to the West German consulate. He told Swedish police he wished to reach West Germany. The captain and crew believed his tale after spotting him paddling about 60 miles off the Polish coast. The ferry had him aboard about eight hours and he and his canoe had four days of food and water aboard.
