Lakewood Pan American Festival Plans Drive Community Effort
Lakewood prepares for the 24th Lakewood Pan American Festival to be held April 13 to 19 with luncheons dinners speeches dances a fiesta and parade. volunteer leaders estimate over 10 000 man hours from residents and more than 150 people work weeks ahead on the parade with 4 000 participants and many bands. The four day fiesta carnival will again be staged with about 35 Junior Chamber of Commerce members assisting. Carolina Jeffries notes planning begins as soon as the prior event ends.

About 1,500 officials and budding athletes are expected to descend on California State College at Long Beach in June for the Western Special Olympics trials. Registration Drive Aims To Boost County Voter Registration

Teacher writer John Gartner dies in Kansas hometown
John Gartner 65 longtime editor of Western Outdoors magazine and Long Beach high school coach died of a heart attack in Salina Kansas while returning from a camper purchase with his wife Elizabeth Gartner started Western Outdoors in 1940 and wrote over 300 articles and several camping books He served as president of the Outdoor Writers Association of America and taught at Lindbergh Junior High Wilson High Long Beach City College and LBCC before becoming Western Outdoors editor He is survived by his wife and three daughters Private funeral services are pending.
