Smokey the police dog saves boy from copperhead bite

Smokey, a six year old German shepherd trained for police work, knocked down 13 year old Marie Myers near Hillsboro Missouri while leaping at a venomous copperhead. The dog bit the snake, swelling its leg. a veterinarian expects recovery and Marie’s father Deputy Sheriff William Myers plans to nurse the dog back to health.

Tennessee Williams Fears for His Life Note Found

The brother of Tennessee Williams reports a note from the playwright predicting possible violent harm. Attorney W Dakin Williams of Collinsville Illinois received the message written on New York restaurant stationery, stating, If anything of a violent nature happens to me it will not be a case of death by own action. The note mentions treachery and con men, and says Williams plans to be moved to safety if needed.

Colorado Coed Mary Smiley crowned Miss Wool of America 1963

Mary Smiley of Englewood Colorado won the Miss Wool of America title at the San Angelo pageant in West Texas. She is a journalism and marketing major at the University of Colorado and received a 15000 wardrobe a new car and a 2000 scholarship. Runners up were Arla Jo Greene Phoenix Candi Ford Las Vegas New Mexico and Jeanne Stine St Paul Minnesota. There were sixteen other contestants including Mary Dean Indart of Fresno California.

Rockefeller Visits Humphrey Drugstore in Huron

New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller visited the Humphrey drugstore in Huron D D on Thursday. He was greeted by Mrs Ralph Humphrey and a woman clerk who whispered I am the only Republican working here. Rockefeller found he was eight cents short of 21.08 and a reporter lent two dimes to cover the bill. He bought earrings for his wife and small gifts for his children as laughter filled the shop. Mrs Humphrey called the visit good for morale and noted RFK had similar campaigning there in the past.

Author Manchester Turns in His Pistol

Author William Manchester turned a 45 caliber automatic pistol to Middletown police saying he lost two friends to assassination recently. He urged others to turn in guns to protect children and cited his war memories from Guadalcanal Okinawa and recovery after a Marine action.

Doctors Warn of Walkout Over County General Hospital

Redwood City staff doctors threaten resignations if immediate hospital improvements are not approved. The county faces bond funds, accreditation probation, and ongoing debates on phasing out County General with surrounding hospitals proposed to absorb patients. Dr. Richard J.
